Other News feed types
Internal news sources and external RSS/Atom feeds are described elsewhere. Firefly.NET also supports five other types of News feed as shown in the News feed type pull-down menu shown above.
Resource folder feed
In the example shown below, a folder in the Resources share called Experiments has a set of documents which need to be made available for download. To do this, the News feed type is selected as Resource folder feed. Pressing the down arrow in the Source folder box allows navigation to the folder concerned, which is then selected by clicking.
Other controls in the window are exactly the same as for all other types of News feed:
Style: this allows you to publish the summary in three ways, Normal, Blog and Scrolling ticker. Examples of each are given on the RSS page.
Choose Display items to select how many of the files you wish to have displayed (top 3, top 5, top 10 or All are the available options).
Show>Titles: check this box to display the Title of the page containing the files (this will be the link title unless specified otherwise in the Advanced tab of the Add/Modify Page dialog box.
Show>Publication dates: check this box to display the date of publication of the story (in dd/mm/yyyy format)
Show>Abstracts: check this box to show 'abstracts' - a short description of the file which is entered into the Description box of the Modify Resource dialog box. This is accessed via the Resource Manager (Tools menu > Site) by clicking the edit button associated with the file. See below.
Show>Feed title: check this box to display the RSS feed title and the associated RSS icon .
The highlighted component below shows the summary where Style is Normal, Display items is set to All and all four Show options are checked.
My Feed
My Feed is a component like any other (available from insert a news feed) that page authors can insert into any page. A likely use would be as an intranet home page.
- It allows users to subscribe to any page in the system (press Subscribe at bottom of page) and they see a list of their subscriptions which act as quick links and changes that have occurred to the pages they have subscribed to or their children.
- Example: a student can subscribe to feeds/pages from Physics, Lunch Menu, DJM's prep, Economics and History and they effectively get a customised home page showing them what has changed in those sections/pages. Also shows comments.
